Chapter 15

When all was ready, Gina took Alexei down to the observation platform on the 52nd floor of the Shard, where waiting in army fatigues was Natasha, plus the security escort from the SIG. They were represented by Elizabeth Kilmister and two female guards, both armed with automatic stun guns.

“Right, is the prisoner ready?” snapped Elizabeth and pointing to one of the guards, asked her to handcuff Alexei. Gina ran forward to protest, but Natasha waved her back.

“If this is to be a success we have to make it look like a deportation, is that clear Ms Martinet?” she ordered.

“Yes, but I don’t know how you have the audacity to think this will work. We are only assisting you under pressure from above, so it’s your responsibility if it goes wrong -, is that clear?” Ms. Kilmister remarked.

“It’s always a pleasure to do business with the SIG Elizabeth, and nothing will go wrong,” replied Natasha. When they walked towards the elevator, Gina ran forward and kissed Alexei, whose head was already hung in shame. Natasha stood at the back of the lift with Alexei, while Elizabeth and the escort stood by the doors.

As the lift descended, Natasha pulled out a packet of gum from her top pocket and offered it to Alexei saying, “Here eat this, it will give you energy to get through this pantomime and you might actually enjoy the music.”

Alexei took the gum and began chewing on it. She could hear the song ‘Imagine’ in her head, and smiled at Natasha. When the doors opened they were in a wide corridor with a sign in blue letters ‘The Bridge’ pointing towards huge steel double doors at the end.

“Right, I want the prisoner at the front between the guards when we meet the press outside,” as Natasha hung back behind and walked beside Elizabeth, who turned to speak to her.

“I see you are wearing a holster and what looks like a firearm, which will be removed once we reach the scanner. You know that’s not allowed to be taken on board the train?”

“Good spot Elizabeth, but in fact it generates a small portal which I think I will use now, as I have no intention of being photographed going through your scanner. So Elizabeth, see you on the train,” and with that Natasha disappeared in a blue flash.

When the main doors opened a small group of reporters had gathered to record the latest image of an illegal immigrant being returned to Europe. Alexei raised her cuffed hands above her head, smiling in defiance at the press, who were shouting the usual sound-bites like, ‘tell us your name’ and ‘how’s it feel to be going back?’ which the guards ignored and walked straight towards a desk with ‘UK Border’, written above it. One of the guards handed the female immigration officer a small opaque screen which Alexei guessed were the details of her deportation order as the party moved forward and towards another blue sign that simply said ‘BRIDGE STATION.
